He gets a job at a local construction company and meets Michael "Mike" Lane (Channing Tatum), who also works there as a roof tiler. However, Adam quits on his first day after being accused of stealing by the supervisor. As he's trying to leave his car will not start, so Mike gives him a ride home.

Try as I might to find fault in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," I found myself actually enjoying the two hours I spent watching Honest Abe twirl his silver ax with glee, splitting the heads of evildoing bloodsuckers. Sure, the premise is as silly as they come, and speaks most assuredly to our new age of "fanboy-dom," where the nerds of the world, having long suffered in B-movie oblivion, are now a sought-after audience.

Abe Lincoln already holds a mythical place in U.S. history, and despite its goofiness, perhaps "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" will inspire audiences to learn more about the real man behind the beard and the stovepipe hat. If this film can make characters like Lincoln come alive and stay relevant through the ages, like the immortal vampires he swears to destroy, perhaps a little silliness is worth it in the end.

The Do-Deca-Pentathlon (2012): If the works of Jay and Mark Duplass boast a visual trademark, that trademark would be the “punch zoom.” In pertinent moments throughout all the Duplass films, starting with their mumblecore debut The Puffy Chair, the camera quickly zooms in on characters—like, well, a punch—shifting the focus from big to small, from macro to micro. Many moviegoers consider this stylistic staple a literal punchline for their offbeat humor, but it seems to function more as a symbol of what they’re devoted to as filmmakers: the eschewing of big, impersonal narratives for small, intimate stories that hone in on the simple and profound realities of human experience.

The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, the latest from the Duplass brothers (though shot before their last two released films), exemplifies such devotion. Starring Mark Kelly and Steve Zissis (also a key player in Baghead and Jeff Who Lives at Homes), the film tells an up-close-and-personal tale about two grown brothers, Jeremy (Kelly) and Mark (Zissis). Upon reuniting for a family birthday, the siblings battle it out in a homemade Olympic event—the Do-Deca-Pentathlon, a competition they created as children. Not surprisingly, this competition yields strong comedy throughout the film as the two lose sleep over their struggle while trying to hide it from the rest of the family. But their contest goes far beyond comical competitiveness, tapping into a mutual resentment within the two men and serving as a catalyst for them to unlock their inner child and cope with the disappointment and discontentment of their adult lives.

In their commitment to humanity, the Duplasses keep Do-Deca-Pentathlon’s potentially predictable premise—an excuse to watch adults act like children for an hour and a half—from becoming predictable. In fact, the droll competition only serves as the stage for a play about relationships, family and reconciliation, as well as how personal problems get projected onto such things. Obviously, the competition also works as a metaphor—an outward manifestation of an inner struggle between Jeremy and Mark—which concludes in an intense yet moving finale in the front yard.

The Duplass brothers achieve such sentiment—and the overarching humanness from which it stems—through a whole slew of elements, specifically the sharp writing and realistic aesthetic present in all their works. It’s most achieved, though, by the characters. Somewhat similar to the great Wes Anderson, the Duplasses possess a rare sensibility for character, creating human beings we connect with and love—no matter how flawed or odd they may be. Their cast brings these individuals to life with an array of subtly honest performances. Kelly and Zissis help the film delve beneath the rather amusing surface of Jeremy and Mark, and as Mark’s lovingly patient wife, Stephanie, Jennifer Lafleur does likewise.

At sixty-five, Young retains a youthful vitality and musical curiosity that balances his wisdom and experience. It's no wonder he's been an inspiration to the likes of Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth. In Neil Young Journeys, Demme intersperses the Massey Hall concert footage with brief scenes from a road trip through Ontario. Driving a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria, Young visits the rural town of Omemee, where he spent a key part of his formative years, and reminisces about his former neighbors and their daughters. As he drives past bulldozers transforming the landscape, he remarks, 'It's all gone... it's still in my head.

More story: We got the fullest display of that during Young’s live performance ofHitchhiker. This personal chronicle of drug use and its effects billowed from his guitar with a raw animal energy that seemed to personify the demons he was singing about. The tonic drones that carried the verses became immense, and when he activated a bass-coupling foot pedal during the chorus, the whole building shook. The instrument’s reverberant tumult pushed his voice to the limit, as if he were howling from the middle of a long bad trip, instead of recounting it from a safe distance.

 

He got through most of the songs of Le Noise, including Peaceful Valley Boulevard, a parable-like narrative of environmental and cultural degradation, and Walk with Me, a love song built in such a way that both Young’s wife Pegi and his oldest fans could hear it as addressed personally to them. It’s a strong collection that spans all of his songwriting voices, from the intimate and personal to the prophetic, sometimes within a single verse. I would have preferred to hear Angry World, which he didn’t play (and for which he won a Grammy), than Love and War, which I find the least satisfying on the album.
